Rating 2.5/5

Student of the Year 2 is a romantic comedy-teen drama film written by Arshad Sayed and directed by Punit Malhotra. It was jointly produced by Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta under the banner Dharma Productions. The film has been distributed by Fox Star Studios. The cast has Ananya Pandey, Tara Sutaria and Tiger Shroff. The supporting cast boasts of Samir Soni, Rajesh Kumar, Manasi Joshi Roy and Abhishek Bajaj.

A small town boy Rohan Sehgal (Tiger Shroff), madly in love with his childhood sweetheart Mridula (Tara Sutaria), follows her to city’s top college. But this new term brings friends, foes and cut-throat competition along with heartbreak.

Welcome to the class of 2019 at Dehradun’s most upscale college Saint Teresa. It’s a place where all things are attractive and vibrant. It is safe to say that Tiger Shroff fits right into the scheme of things when he secures an admission with a sports quota. He comes from a lesser privileged college, where students don’t have the luxury of fancy lifestyle. But his many talents start becoming a cause of concern for the flavour of Saint Teresa, Manav Mehra (Aditya Seal). Add to that, Manav’s sister Shreya (Ananya Pandey ), the college brat, who thinks of herself as no less than a rich princess, is all set to take on Rohan and embarrass him at every given opportunity. Twist and tale in the love story is predictable but yet fresh and enjoyable to the eye and heart.

The film pace is good and it is a vibrant candy floss romance in the backdrop of a college which is sensitive and real too and reflects the psyche of youngsters in colleges. Tiger looks and act good but his presentation is same heroic like his previous films. He has done a different film now where there is no action and no dance to prove his worth in a bigger way. The surprise package is Aditya Seal with absolutely fantastic attitude, look and acting and action skills. He surely deserves a bigger opportunity next. Chunky Pandey’s daughter Ananya is a bundle of talent and is good considering this is her debut film. The song Mein bhi nahi soya is melodious and hook up song is catchy but somehow the rest of them fell flat.

The film has a Karan Johar stamp. The look feel and ambiance of the film is rich. Films are a make believe world and we go to theatre to check out what we don’t get to see in real life easily. Since the film title is Student of the Year, it has a competition streak which is very real. Every one wants to be the best and remain at the top and it is about how the rich parents’ children tend to dominate others.  Karan’s film are always full of romance, emotions and drama. However, this one franchise could have had a better message

Samir Soni looked perfect in his special appearance as the principal. He deserves bigger roles in more films to showcase his talent. Small cameos as commentator of Sahil Anand and Manjot Singh and Rajesh Kumar were apt too.  Overall the film is a one time watch and will make you forget the outside heat.

What could have been done to make film more appealing- Have some education too in the college, more emotions of character artists, better reasoning for Tara Sutaria’s conduct and presence of a mother in the film, which is typical of Karan Johar films. Instead of just Alia Bhatt, Varun and Siddarth Malhotra should also have been used in the song. Chunky Pandey could have played Aditya Seal and Ananya’s  on-screen father. Some emotional connect of Aditya Seal’s father with him should have been shown too.
